1 Research Fellowship on Smokeless Tobacco Cessation at the Department of Health Sciences in UK | University of York

We seek a research fellow to work on a MRC funded study titled ‘Adapting a behavioural support intervention for smokeless tobacco cessation in South Asians’. The appointee will work within the Department of Health Sciences. The key tasks involve setting up and co-ordinating the above study and supporting the writing-up of research for publication and presentation in academic and non-academic settings.

Around 300 million people worldwide consume smokeless tobacco. Considered to be a part of the culture, its use is particularly common in people of South Asian-origin. The study is designed to identify the modification required in behavioural counselling to make it more effective, feasible and acceptable to South Asians in supporting them to quit smokeless tobacco. The study will be carried out at health facilities in the UK and in Pakistan respectively. The study will involve working closely with the Stop Smoking Service.

The successful candidate will have an academic background in health and/or social sciences, and experience in carrying out research among communities of South-Asian origin in the UK or in South Asia. Experience of conducting qualitative research and familiarity with quantitative research methods will be essential. Experience of working in tobacco cessation would also be a distinct advantage. We would particularly welcome applications from individuals who have already demonstrated an ability to recruit members of communities of South-Asian origin to research studies, and who have an interest in pursuing a research career in ethnic health and/or tobacco control.

The vacancy is for a part-time position of 22.2 hours per week. The appointment is available for a period of 18 months.
