Περιγραφή

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for the position of a Post-doctoral Scientist with interest and focus in atmospheric chemistry and physics. The position available is in a group comprised of a dynamic team of researchers investigating Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) now casting methods for the optimized operation of concentrating solar technologies, funded by EC. The position offers excellent possibilities for professional development and advancement for highly motivated individuals. The appointment will be for a fixed term period with the possibility of an extension depending on performance, project requirements and availability of funds.

Position Description

The Post-doctoral Scientist in Natural/Atmospheric Scienceswill be involved in the review and evaluation of the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System’s (SDS-WAS) activities of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The aim is to investigate the suitability and availability of the SDS-WAS dust forecasts for the purpose of Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) forecasting and now-casting; the latter is a prerequisite for the efficient operation of concentrated solar technologies (CSP). The successful candidate will also be directly involved in the validation of Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) measurements of solar radiation relevant to Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) generation.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Be responsible for fulfilling tasks detailed in the DNICAST project and related to its activities.
  • Participate to a number of international meetings where s/he will disseminate the findings.
  • Publish and communicate the research results and implications at different levels, including academic, public, and policy-related.

Candidate Profile

  • Candidates should have a PhD in natural sciences, and related research and experience in atmospheric chemistry and physics
  • Knowledge of atmospheric suspended particulate matter (aerosols) including processes that control their movement through the atmosphere, their interaction with solar radiation and ways that these processes are integrated into atmospheric models.
  • A basic knowledge of meteorological processes and modelling
  • Experience in managing and analyzing data graphically and statistically using computers is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports and scientific publications and communicate results to others orally.
  • A demonstrated ability to work with and communicate well as a team member.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage.

Application

For full consideration, interested applicants should send:

  • a brief vision statement
  • CV including their publication record and
  • the names of two contactable referees (all documentation should be in English) by e-mail to HR[at]cyi.ac.cy showing the following reference in the subject heading: EEWRC_PDAS_13_19.

Recruitment will continue until the positions are filled. Please note that applications without the proper reference number in the subject heading will be discarded.
