1 PhD Student position at the Microbial Population Biology lab in Switzerland | ETH Zürich

Candidates are interested in developing the analysis of microbial community structure at micrometer scales using droplet microfluidics and DNA sequencing. Microbes are abundant and extremely important in the environments but little is know about their interactions and associations. Part of the problem is that their community structure is typically studied at macro scales, missing their spatial organization at lengths relevant for population processes (e.g . <100um). In this project (a 50-50 collaboration with the lab of Prof. Andrew deMello at ETH) we will tackle this challenge. The project has an experimental component, involving the application of droplet microfluidics to compartamentalize and image microaggregates and a computational component involving the analysis of next-gene sequencing data. The result of this combination of experiments and theory will be the reconstruction of networks of ecological association between microbes at micron scales. Candidates for this position should have a strong quantitative background. Experience in the lab is a strong plus.
