Dynamics of excitons and charge carriers in conjugated organic semiconductors:
Exciton dynamics and charge photogeneration in conjugated polymers are essential ingredients in both light emitting and photovoltaic devices based on these organic materials. On the molecular level, detailed insight into electronic and optical properties can be obtained from quantum-chemical calculations, e.g., based on density-functional theory and time-dependent DFT. In molecular solids, also obtaining a better understanding of inter-molecular processes is crucial. In this project, we will investigate excitonic excitations as well as their separation into two individual charge carriers (polarons). Using the experience already available in the group, we will study the dynamics of the charge-separation process and the role that intra- and inter-molecular processes play for the charge separation to occur. Further we will investigate the process of chemical doping of conjugated polymers that is – although widely used – still not fully understood.
