Περιγραφή

We now seek a PhD student who is able to combine theory, in particular electrodynamics simulations, and experiments, in particular various kinds of optical spectroscopy, for the development of new and improved metamaterials specifically designed for sensing applications.

Information about the research field

Rapid conceptual developments and progress in nanofabrication technologies, computational electromagnetics and optical measurement methodologies have brought optics and photonics firmly into the realm of nanoscience. Nanophotonics now encompass subfields of extremely high current interest – plasmonics, optical nanoscopy, metamaterials, to name a few. The methods and concepts developed in nanophotonics have a very broad applicability and may provide solutions to challenges as diverse as single molecule medical diagnostics, quantum optics for tomorrow’s telecom networks and environmentally friendly fuels from solar energy harvesting.

Information about the research group

The Bionanophotonics group at Chalmers is engaged in fundamental and applied nanophotonics studies at the international research frontier. The group is truly international (currently 10 nationalities represented) and consists of MSc and PhD students, post docs and senior scientists. We do experiments, theory and computer simulations and we are heavy users of Chalmers nanofabrication facility.

Information about the research project

A metamaterial is a material built up from articficial "atoms" in such a way that it behaves like a homogeneous material to electromagnetic radiation with long enough wavelength. We have developed a number of two-dimensional metamaterials based on well-defined metal nanostructures that behave like "optical antennas" because of their so-called plasmon resonances. The main application area for these structures is optical sensor technologies, including biomomolecular analysis and threat detection.
