Περιγραφή

The discipline of Education (pedagogik) in Sweden has its intellectual roots in philosophy and cultural psychology, and focuses on the conditions under which we and others become historical, cultural and social beings in a world that is primarily understood in terms of change. The focus of research into this tradition of pedagogik is on educational relations in various contexts, as well as the formation of those contexts over time. Within Education at Södertörn there are several specialisations in this tradition of thought represented within the teaching body, such as Intercultural Education, Educational Psychology and Educational Theory and Policy (ETP).

Project description

This call for applications includes both admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, at Örebro University and employment as a doctoral at Södertörn University. The position is also linked to the Baltic and Eastern European Graduate School (BEEGS) at Södertörn University. BEEGS focus on the Baltic region and Eastern Europe, which means that all doctoral projects must focus on this area. The applicant’s research proposal will provide the foundation of his/her job description.

The doctoral student will also be linked to the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences at Örebro University where she/he will be admitted into its doctoral program. There will also be a co-supervisor from Örebro University. The candidate will contribute to a programme of work led by Professor Dr Carl Anders Säfström at Södertörn University. Within this programme, research is currently being undertaken on the following topics:

  • The theory, philosophy and policy of teacher education;
  • Comparative research on traditions of theory and research in education;
  • The role of research in the improvement of educational practice;
  • The concept of teaching in educational theory and practice;
  • Limits of constructivism and learning;
  • Equality in education.

The intended outcome for students admitted to third-cycle education is a PhD. The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. A doctoral student’s working hours should primarily be dedicated to his/her third-cycle studies; however, the position may entail other duties within education, research and/or administration, but these may be equivalent to no more than 20 % of full time. The doctoral student will take courses provided by Örebro University as part of the doctoral studentship.

The doctoral student will be included in research networks in Educational Theory and Policy containing both other doctoral students as well as senior researchers at Södertörn University, Gdansk University, Luxembourg University and Örebro University. Professor Dr Tomasz Szkudlarek at the Department of Philosophy of Education and Cultural Studies at Institute of Education, University of Gdańsk, will serve as international co-supervisor.

Entry requirements and selection

The general entry requirements are:

  • a second-cycle qualification,
  • fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
  • the acquisition of substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Only persons who are being admitted or who have already been admitted to third-cycle courses and programmes may be employed on a doctoral studentship.

Specific entry requirements

The specific entry requirements are fulfilled by a student who has passed courses worth at least 90 credits, including a degree project/dissertation worth at least 15 credits at second-cycle level within Education (pedagogik). Employment

An application for a place on a third-cycle programme is also an application for employment on a doctoral studentship. In total, employment in this position is for a maximum time of eight years, but not for a longer time than that equivalent to four years of full-time third-cycle education. The provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are stated in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. Doctoral students will be employed by the School of Culture and Education at Södertörn University. The first date of employment is 1 October 2014.
