Περιγραφή

The Complex Photonic Systems (COPS) Chair strives to perform world-class research on light propagation and spontaneous emission in nanophotonic media. We combine advanced optical experiments with the development of photonic nanostructures and with a deep theoretical understanding of the properties of light. In 2011 we performed seminal experiments wherein spontaneous emission of light is inhibited in a 3D photonic band gap, we were the first to image objects with a very high resolution with an intricate opaque lens, and we have optically switched microcavities with ultimate speed. Our curiosity-driven research is of interest to industrial partners, and to applications in e.g. biophysics. Our research is part of in the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente, as part of the Strategic Research Orientation “Applied Nanophotonics”

You will be part of a team working towards complete control of light in two-dimensional systems. The goal of your project is to control the propagation and localization of light in such structures, and enable very long pulse delay times, which are of interest for applications in phased-array transmitters and receivers. Two-dimensional nanophotonic resonator arrays are in the process of being designed and fabricated. These arrays consist of many weakly-coupled nanophotonic cavities inside a photonic crystal, and can act as a printed circuit board for light. You will use order, disorder, and dynamic effects to control and steer light pulses through a circuit. You will construct a new setup involving a powerful pump laser as well as the wavefront shaping apparatus developed in our group. Finally, you will analyze the results in the framework of localization theory and the theory of dynamic nanophotonics.

Requirements

We are looking for experimental scientists with a MSc (or equivalent) in Physics, Nanotechnology, Physical Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or related disciplines, with strong interest in Physics of light and creating new materials. Our favored candidates are creative and like to push boundaries. Since teamwork is key in top-level science, you enjoy working together with others.

If you are interested in this vacancy you can send your application letter to the:

University of Twente

Attn. of Ms. Nilda Rijpma P.O. Box 217 7500 AE Enschede The Netherlands or email: cops@ tnw.utwente.nl Please send us your resume (incl. list of grades!), personal motivation on why you want to join the group (max. 1 page). Applications without such a motivation will not be taken into account. With this motivation, however, your application will receive our fullest attention!

Conditions of employment

We offer a very challenging position in an inspiring multidisciplinary and international environment.

As a PhD candidate you will be offered a full-time (38 hours/week) position for four years, after which you should have completed your PhD thesis. In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, the gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from € 2083 in the first year to €2664 in the final year plus a holiday allowance (8%), and end-year bonus (8.3% of the annual salary) and a number of additional benefits. The University of Twente provides excellent campus facilities, and actively supports professional and personal development. Our group has excellent international contacts and outstanding intellectual and technological infrastructure.
