The LCSB is accelerating biomedical research by closing the link between systems biology and medical research. Collaboration between biologists, medical doctors, computer scientists, physicists and mathematicians is offering new insights in complex systems like cells, organs, and organisms. These insights are essential for understanding principal mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and for developing new tools in diagnostics and therapy.

The Molecular Systems Physiology group was recently established at the LCSB. Its research focuses on using and developing state-of-art computational approaches to investigate the links between diet and human health.

Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) in systems biomedicine (m/f)

• Fixed-term contract 3 years, 40h/week
• Ref.: I1R-MSP-PFN-12ATHU
• Employee status (start date: as soon as possible)

Area: Constraint-based modeling (COBRA) of human metabolism

Tasks/Mission:

• Integration and analysis of “omics” data sets, e.g. metabolomic data, in the context of the human metabolic model.
• Interpretation of the computational modeling results with respect to metabolic disease states.
• Refinement and expansion of the most recent human metabolic model.
• The project will thus include key technologies used in computational systems biology and bioinformatics.

Your profile

• Master´s degree (or equivalent) in Computational Biology, Biochemistry, or (Molecular) Biology.
• Strong interest in computational modeling and human biology.
• Basic skills/ experience in programming and statistical data analysis.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Excellent working knowledge of English.
