The open position is created in a consortium which was successful in the competitive Marie Curie call: "Industry academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP), launched by the European Commission in 2012. The mission of the IAPP project “decent AID” is to develop novel drug delivery systems (DDS) produced by centrifugal technologies which are composed to minimize adverse immune reactions and designed for optimised therapeutic effects. The consortium consists of 3 highly ranked European universities and an innovative medium sized pharmaceutical company with approved drugs on the market and strong engagement in clinical trials.

Task description

The company ABNOBA GmbH is the project coordinator and intends to recruit a PhD student with a master degree for the development of novel DDS for complex and biogenic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). This comprises the extraction of API from plant material and the generation of colloidal nanocapsules for the encapsulation of API. The production technologies of DDS are developed in collaboration with process engineers.The quality and suitability of the DDS is tested together with immunologists at the University of Uppsala/S and pharmacists at the University of Utrecht/NL who are members of the consortium. The goal is to produce API loaded DDS, to test the reduced activation of the innate immune system by the DDS and to analyse the efficiency of the targeting of the DDS in comparison to API without a DDS.

Duration: 48 months.

Eligibility requirements:

• Master degree in pharmacy or adjacent sciences like biology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemical or bioengineering, biotechnology, etc.
• Willingness to perform research in 3 different countries: at the German SME ABNOBA GmbH (24 months) and at two excellent European universities in Uppsala/S and Utrecht/NL (together 24 months), where a PhD thesis is to be submitted within the 48 months of employment.

Professional Qualifications:

• Proficiency in English in both writing and professional conversation.
• Knowledge of either German, Dutch and/or Swedish are advantageous.
• Scientific background and practical experiences in one or several of the following fields are considered as a merit:

colloids and surface sciences,

drug delivery systems,

protein biochemistry

innate immunity

in vitro and in vivo testing of drugs.
