Περιγραφή

The Informatics Institute (IvI) is one of the eight research institutes of the Faculty of Science. The IvI covers a wide range of subjects, in both fundamental and applied research. The System and Network Engineering (SNE) group researches cross-domain interaction between Grid resource providers, optical and hybrid networking, resource descriptions using semantic web and programmable networks for the Future Internet. In collaboration with SURFnet and SURFsara, UvA has capabilities to access high-speed optical test bed installations in the optical photonic backbone of SURFnet in the Netherlands and internationally in the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF).

Project description

Reasoning with large-scale data over wide-area networks

The researcher will be embedded in a collaborative project between the professors, Cees de Laat (UvA), Henri Bal (VUA) and Frank van Harmelen (VUA). The main aim of this collaborative effort is the use of state of the art wide area networks (with transatlantic bandwidth of up to 100Gb/sec) for the very data intensive task of performing logical inference over semi-structured data. The research team holds the world record on performing such inference on local compute clusters, and the challenge to be solved is whether these techniques can be adapted to also work over very wide area networks, enabling parallelism on a truly global scale.

The candidate will study the information systems from the participating projects and investigate reasoning systems that can answer increasingly complex questions using the available data. Actions taken based on the answers will need to be monitored and produce new data from which it is expected that the system can learn. The postdoctoral researcher will work in teams at both VU and UvA and make use of the combined expertise for his/her investigation. This work is in line with the emerging trend of BigData processing on smart infrastructure.

Requirements

The ideal candidate would have knowledge and experience in both parallel computing, in network engineering, and in knowledge representation, but candidates with substantial knowledge and experience in at least two out of these three will also be considered.

  • PhD in computer science;
  • experience with semantic web languages, reasoning, machine learning;
  • fluent in English;
  • ability to work in an international research team.

Conditions of employment

The position will start in fall 2013. The appointment will be full time (38 hours a week) on a temporary basis for a maximum period of three years, but a substantial part-time appointment is also possible. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,427 up to a maximum of €4,462 (salary scale 10/11) based on a full-time appointment depending on qualifications, expertise and on the number of years of professional experience. The collective employment agreement of Dutch universities is applicable. There are also secondary benefits, such as 8% holiday allowance per year and the end of year allowance of 8.3 %.
