Περιγραφή
The Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR is the research institute in Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. It is the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and is among the largest worldwide. More than 50 senior researchers are permanently associated with ASCoR, and its English-language PhD program has more than 35 students.
ASCoR currently has one vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher for the NWO-funded project ‘The Impact of Sexual Media Content on Adolescent Sexuality: An Experiential Perspective’.
Project description
In the past years, there have been heated public debates about whether audio-visual sexual content on the internet and on television, such as music videos, reality series, and pornographic material, affects adolescents’ sexuality. Still, however, we lack a profound understanding of when and why such effects occur. Specifically, we do not know which processes underlie the effects and on which factors they depend. The project addresses these shortcomings by developing a comprehensive account of how audio-visual sexual content influences adolescents’ sexuality, especially their sexual cognitions and sexual behavior. The project is based on a Vidi grant, awarded by the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to Jochen Peter, the principal investigator. Within the project, a three-wave panel survey among a representative sample of more than 2000 Dutch adolescents has been fielded in 2013, covering an extensive array of measures of the use of sexual media content, experiential factors, as well as sexual attitudes, sexual beliefs, and sexual behavior. These high quality data, which will be completely gathered by June 2014, will form the basis of multiple publications targeted at top journals in communication science and neighboring disciplines. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to analyze these data and write high-quality papers based on these data, in collaboration with a small team.
A fulltime appointment with 0.2 FTE teaching time within the Department of Communication Science is negotiable.
Requirements
The candidate should:
- have a – preferably proven - research interest in the topic of the project. Experience with research on media, adolescents, and/or sexual development is very desirable;
- have a background in communication science, but candidates from other social scientific fields are welcome to apply;
- have a proven expertise in longitudinal survey research and notably the analysis of longitudinal data, for example in their doctoral dissertation and publications;
- have experience with the analysis of existing (‘secondary’) data;
- have the ability, willingness, and commitment to work in a small team;
- have an excellent written and spoken command of English, as demonstrated by publications in English-language journals;
- hold a relevant PhD degree in behavioral or social sciences. Candidates who are due to finish their dissertation before June 1st are welcome to apply;
- have an excellent publication track record relevant to the project.
Conditions of employment
The position starts no later than 1 June 2014, and is initially for 1 year. Extension of the contract after the first year to a maximum total of 26 months is subject to satisfactory performance. Depending on your knowledge and experience, your monthly gross salary will range between €2.427 and €4.462 (scale 10 or 11 according to the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities) based on a full-time basis.
We offer a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities.
