Περιγραφή

INESC-ID Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa, Portugal is one of the largest and most dynamic research institutes in Portugal in the areas of communication and information technologies.

Two research grants (Bolsa para Mestre) are now available in project Rosetta - The Generative Design Tool: PTDC/ATP-AQI/5224/2012 funded by FCT/MEC through national funds (PIDDAC), under the following conditions:

Duration

Six months from 2013, Oct 22. The grant may be renewed within the period of the project, not exceeding the maximum period set by FCT for such grants. Renewal is subject to suitable performance.

Legislation

A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to “Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology-2013”, the INESC ID Grant regulations approved by FCT, Lei nº 40/2004 de 18 de Agosto (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), and the law “Decreto-Lei n. º 202/2012 de 27 de Agosto” and amended by “Decreto-Lei nº 233/2012, de 29 de Outubro” and by the “Lei nº 12/2013, de 29 de Janeiro.”

Monthly amount

The monthly amount of the grant (980 EUR) is in accordance with the values stipulated in the “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources” of FCT and INESC-ID Lisboa grant regulations approved by FCT, and shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.

Objectives / summary

Rosetta is a DrRacket-based IDE for geometric modelling that operates as a front-end for different CAD tools, including AutoCAD, Rhino, MicroStation and a fast OpenGL visualizer, while allowing different programming languages to be used for the implementation of geometric models.

To fully implement Rosetta, the candidate will achieve one or more of the following objectives:

  • Implementation of interprocess communication mechanisms between Racket and AutoCAD, Rhino, and MicroStation, planning for future extension to other CADs
  • Identification of data types and operations that are functionally equivalent for those CADs but also for others such as Maya, 3ds Max, ArchiCAD, Revit, Generative Components, and Blender
  • Implementation of a module with a normalized set of modelling operations for Rosetta that should be sufficient for most modelling activities. This module will have specific implementations for each back-end but this will be transparent for the user
  • Implementation of additional front-end languages, namely Python, JavaScript, and AutoLISP
  • Implementation of traceability mechanisms that allow users to identity the flow of code that computed each geometric shape and also all shapes computed by a given expression
  • Integration of CGAL (Computational Geometry Algorithms Library) into Rosetta, allowing users to specify the exactness degree for geometric predicates and constructions
  • Implementation of a fast visualizer based on OpenGL, that allows users to quickly visualize changes made to the geometric models
  • Writing of the necessary documentation for the user and for the developer
  • Development of a web site that centralizes all the information about Rosetta, including downloads, documentation, a gallery of generated images and a public forum

Scientific supervision

The activity will be supervised by António Menezes Leitão, Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, researcher at INESC-ID. The grantee will be integrated at INESC-ID, Lisboa, in the ESW Group (https://www.esw.inesc-id.pt/).

Required education Level and research experience

The candidate should have a Masters Degree and good programming experience.

Evaluation criteria

Academic record of the candidate (50%), interest for Computer Aided Design, Programming Languages, and Software Engineering (50%), and the Juri may decide to interview the candidates in order to perform a more objective evaluation of some of the criteria. English language level will also be considered as criteria.

The jury will convene in 2013-10-21

Results

The final evaluation results will be publicized through an ordered list, and the candidates will be notified of the Jury decision by email.

Documents to be submitted

Detailed curriculum vitae; motivation letter; copy of academic study certificates; name of two personal references.

Application Dates

From 2013-10-7 to 2013-10-18.
