The challenge

The Chair CAES is part of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). The Dependability research of the chair is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT). More information on the Chair can be found here.

Project description

The chair CAES of the University of Twente offers a job opening in the European FP7 project "BASTION", on Board and SoC Test Instrumentation for Ageing and No-Failures Found phenomena.

The project is focused on dealing with aging faults and No-Fault Found (NFF) in industrial chip and board applications, e.g. avionics and automotive. These faults cause serious problems in the dependability and safety of complex (digital) systems and imply high maintenance costs. In this project, fault evoking (test generation) as well as detectors for these faults has to be designed, implemented in CMOS or FPGA, and verified. A hierarchical approach using the IJAG standard is foreseen.

The planned activities in this specific position on design, and verification for digital functional blocks (processor IP) are as follows:

- Perform a study on the background of aging and NFF, especially intermittent faults (physics, modeling).

- Advanced CMOS (or FPGA) chip implementation and verification of several new fault evokers and monitors for these faults.

- Investigation of hierarchical (re)use of these instruments at different levels, like chip and board level. Usage of IEEE P1687 (IJTAG) standard in embedded instruments for digital functional blocks are envisioned.

- Develop a demonstrator showing proof of concept of developed hardware and software

- Close cooperation with European leading industries.

Our offer

We offer a full-time (38 hours/week) PhD position in a dynamic and international environment. The duration of the contract is four years. In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, the gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from € 2083, -- in the first year to € 2664, -- in the final year plus a holiday allowance (8%), an end-year bonus (8.3% of the annual salary) and a number of additional benefits. The University of Twente provides excellent campus facilities, and actively supports professional and personal development.

Your profile

Candidates should have an M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering or hardware design orientation Computer Science, excelling in one or more of the following areas: digital circuit chip and FPGA design, testing & related standards (JTAG), and reliability physics.

Candidates should be fluent in English in speech and writing. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.

Candidates should have excellent digital hardware design & test skills, but not avoid software solutions.

You are invited to go to the Apply link at the vacancy site of the UT for your application/motivation letter together with curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a list of courses you have followed (with grades), and the names and email addresses of two referees. The Organisation

The University of Twente. We stand for life sciences and technology. High tech and human touch. Education and research that matter. New technology which drives change, innovation and progress in society. The University of Twente is the only campus university in the Netherlands; divided over six faculties we provide more than fifty educational programmes. The University of Twente has a strong focus on personal development and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out pioneering research.

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes MESA+, CTIT and MIRA.
