Περιγραφή

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1100 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the “System Earth” and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany’s largest science organization.

Within the framework of the project DESERVE (Dead Sea Research Venue), Section 2.1 “Physics of Earthquakes and Volcanoes”, in close cooperation with partners in Israel, Jordan and the Palestine territories, invites applications for a

PhD Position “Numerical modeling of sink-holes” (m/f)

Reference No. 51/2/13 D

Tasks:

The PhD project aims to investigate the onset and evolution of sinkhole collapse by means of numerical modeling. The project shall contribute to the development of better forecasts of collapse events and to future applications of early warning systems. Case studies are planned for the Dead Sea area in collaboration with project partners from Israel, Jordan, Belgium and Germany. The modeling shall be closely linked to different field data from geophysics, morphology, geodesy and soil mechanics. Close collaboration with and research visits to partners of the international and interdisciplinary DESERVE project are foreseen, as is active participation in geophysical field work at sinkholes in the Dead Sea.

The successful candidate will work at GFZ, which, as one of the leading national research institutions in Geosciences in Germany, provides an environment with excellent infrastructure and diverse scientific possibilities.

Qualifications:

We expect motivated candidates with solid basic knowledge and experience in Geophysics, modeling and programming and with enthusiasm for the solution of scientific problems.

Good programming skills (e.g. Python, Fortran or C/C++) are expected. Experience in numerical modeling, in particular with the use of DEM, FD or FE methods, is of advantage.

We further expect good English language skills, as well as an enthusiastic willingness to participate in field work within the DESERVE project and to contribute to field data analysis.

An MSc or diploma degree in Geophysics, Physics or a related field is mandatory to be enrolled in the PhD program of the University Potsdam, Germany.

You can expect a very diverse and challenging job in an international work environment that is characterized by exciting research projects. The compatibility of work and family life is of particular concern to the GFZ. Therefore, it offers the opportunity for flexible working time and workplaces. Moreover, there is a kindergarten located on the research campus.

The GFZ is a partner with Geo.X (www.geo-x.net), and as such it is well connected with other geoscience institutions in Potsdam und Berlin. Geo.X forms the largest regional cluster of geoscientific expertise in Europe and offers excellent opportunities for cooperation and development.
