The Public Research Centre - Gabriel Lippmann, a public establishment for applied scientific research and technology transfer, has an opening for a fixed-term position for its “Environment and Agro-biotechnologies” department (EVA) for:
a PhD thesis position in plant integrative biology (m/f)
(ref: EVA-20130829-PHDPLANT)
Description
Description of the position:
We are looking for a talented candidate holding a Master degree in biology or agronomy who is interested to work on a R&D project on plant cell wall biopolymer formation using an integrative biology approach.
The project includes the ‘Biopolymers, Biomass and Bionergy’ research group of the Environment and Agro-biotechnologies department and the Plant Physiology Research Group of Prof Stanley Lutts (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium; the PhD will be awarded by UCL) and will furthermore benefit from the scientific and technical know-how present in the analytical chemistry, and the plant proteomics and metabolomics platforms of the EVA department.
The objectives of the R&D project are to (1) study the development of the vascular tissue of Cannabis sativa hypocotyl by applying a systems biology approach and to (2) evaluate the roles of the molecular players controlling hemp hypocotyl’s secondary growth and resulting in its particular lignification pattern.
This challenging PhD project, involving transcriptomics and proteomics data acquisition as well as their integration, together with a large imaging approach, aims at understanding cellular mechanisms of cell wall dynamics in plants, with on a longer-term perspective, support the development of more efficient strategies for the use of plant biomass. The PhD student will interact with the existing project team to produce a comprehensive insight on the dynamics of plant cell wall biopolymer production.
Profile:
- The candidate should hold a Master degree in sciences, preferably in biology or agronomy;
- The candidate must demonstrate motivation, self-structure and responsibility as well as ability to work independently;
- Excellent education in plant physiology is considered as an asset;
- The applicant must show his/her willingness to develop good skills in the fields of experimental investigations and characterization techniques;
- The candidate must be fluent in English (oral and written).
Candidates interested in the above position can apply online on the Gabriel Lippmann website
The application file should include:
- a CV
- a motivation letter
- the names of two or three referees
- a list of publications
- and a copy of the last diploma.
