Job description
Project title: Right on TAR-get: in-depth analysis of the molecular mechanism of coal tar therapy
We have recently uncovered the molecular mechanism of an ancient dermatological therapy, namely coal tar. Coal tar is highly effective for atopic dermatitis patients and we found the aryl hydrocarbon receptor to mediate its therapeutic effect (van den Bogaard et al. J Clin Invest 2013). This project aims to gain in-depth molecular insight in: the AhR signalling pathway in keratinocytes, the specific ligand-receptor interaction and related downstream effects, and the therapeutic effects of AhR activation in skin diseases.
With the unique combination of fundamental and translational science in this project we anticipate to generate novel scientific insights in the AhR-signaling in keratinocytes and the working mechanism of coal tar. These data will support the development of mechanism based drugs for an extremely common and important skin disease.
The position is that of a PhD student. You will be a member of the Nijmegen Institute for Infection Inflammation and Immunity (N4i) and NCMLS research school with all privileges and duties attached to it. Have a look at the page of J. Schalkwijk on the NCMLS website and check the page of J. Schalkwijk on the N4i website.
Requirements
We are looking for a biologist/biochemist/biomedical scientist with a strong drive to pursue a carrier in science, and the ability to work in a team. A solid background in molecular biology is required as well as experience with cell culture systems or tissue engineering.
Conditions of employment
- Temporary
- 36 hour per week
- Scale 10A: max € 38600 gross per year at full employment (incl. vacation bonus and end of year payments)
Department
Department of Dermatology
The laboratory of Skin Biology and Experimental Dermatology is part of the NCMLS Research School and N4i institute and has a well-equipped lab facility in the same building where the in-patient department and clinical staff is housed. This enables a close collaboration with clinical investigators.
Our group consists of about 16 people with a background in medicine or basic sciences. We aim to produce high quality research on basic skin biology and the molecular basis of skin diseases. We regularly publish in high-ranking journals.
