Περιγραφή
Reducing fuel consumption is a main focus of the car industry. One way to reduce fuel consumption is to increase the drive train (engine, transmission) efficiency. To increase the drive train efficiency an increasing number of cars are equipped with a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT). This transmission saves fuel and it relies on friction between the belt and the pulley. Understanding and controlling this friction is essential to improve CTV transmissions.
The concept of this transmission relies on a sound understanding of the tribological performance of the different components and mainly on the friction generated between the belt and pulleys. In this project the main focus will be on formulating a model capable of predicting the friction between element and pulley and the main friction mechanism. The project will be challenging, both from the experimental side (implementing AFM, TEM and SEM measurements) and the modeling side (state-of-the-art contact models need to be adapted and implemented). Candidates with a background in tribology and related fields are especially invited to respond because of the nature of the project. This project will be done in close cooperation with a leading supplier in the CVT market.
Requirements
For this PhD position, we are looking for a person with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Physics, with special interest in Tribology. The candidate should have clear affinity with numerical and experimental work. He or she should be fluent in English, experienced in (technical) writing and possess good communication skills. You need to provide IELTS or TOEFL-iBT test results. An interview and a presentation will be part of the selection procedure.
Conditions of employment
We offer a very challenging position in an inspiring multidisciplinary and international environment. As a PhD candidate you will be offered a fulltime position for four years, after which you should have completed your PhD thesis. In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities the gross monthly salary increases from € 2.125,- in the 1st year to € 2.717,- in the final year. In addition, the University of Twente offers attractive fringe benefits.
