1 Postdoctoral Researcher in Performance Analysis and Optimization in Finland | Aalto University

The Department of Communications and Networking (Comnet) at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is seeking to hire an outstanding researcher for the Performance Analysis group to fully funded position.

The position will be placed in the Academy of Finland funded TOP-Energy or FQ4BD project, both studying emerging paradigms in modern data centers and cloud computing. More specifically, the TOP-Energy project focuses on the trade-off between performance and energy consumption in server farms, and FQ4BD on new computing paradigms such as MapReduce that are used to process Big Data. The general aim is to develop theoretical understanding on such stochastic systems, where even the notion of a job is far more complex than it used to be.

Requirements

We invite applications from outstanding individuals with a Doctoral degree in any field relevant to the project, including Computer Science, Applied Mathematics (Stochastics) and Operations Research. An interdisciplinary perspective and experience is highly valued. The successful applicant has demonstrated excellence in two or more of the following topics:

• Distributed computing (data centers, Big Data)
• Modeling and simulation (e.g., using C/C++, Mathematica, or Matlab)
• Stochastic optimization (MDP theory)
• Scheduling and queueing theory

Salary and Contract Terms

The expected starting salary is around 3,500-3,800 €/month, depending on experience and qualifications, and it will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health and social security benefits. The starting date is negotiable. The position will be initially filled for 1 year, with a possible extension.
