1 PhD Research position in Internal Combustion Engines in Sweden | KTH - Royal Institute Of Technology

The divison for internal combustion engines hosts the Competence Center Gas Exchange (CCGEx). CCGEx focuses on research regarding gas management in mordern internal combustion engines. The aim of the research is to make engines more effcient and enviroment-friendly thus to increase fuel efficiency without losing performance, lower emissions of hazardous substances and to manage sound generation and attenuation in the engine gas handling system. The research is based on extensive knowledge of fluid dynamics, acoustics and combustion engine technology and includes both fundamental and applied experiments and simulations as well as development of methodology for such studies. The center is a combined effort between KTH, the Swedish Energy Agancy and the leading vehicle & engine manufactureres in Sweden.

The center will during 2015 employ a PhD student in particulate characterisation and treatment of particulates in the gas exchange system of direct injected spark ignition (DISI) engines.

The project aims to improve understanding of particulate matter in DISI engines. Including particulate formation, evolution and motion in the gas exchange system.The PhD Student will also study the possibility of influence the particulate composition, mass, number and size distribution.

The results of characterization and analysis will result in a proposed physical model applied in 1D system simulation tools.

The position is at most five years, and includes a miximum of 20 % department duties, primarily related to teaching.

Qualifications:

The applicant should have an engineering or master’s degree in one of the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Design and product development, Engineering Physics or a licentiate degree in relevant areas.

You should also be especially motivated for scientific research and have well developed analytical skills to independently formulate and solve problems.The applicant should have a keen interest in engines and simulation of power systems, previous experience in engine development and particle measurment is an advantage.

As a person, it is important that you are comitted, analytical, have a positive attitude and an abillity to motivate yourself even when you are faced with tough intellectual challenges, Your abillity to take responsibillity and be structured is of great importance since you will have a job with no ready answers.

Good communication skills and very good English language skills are required. Swedish language skills are an advantage. We will place great emphasis on personal charachteristics in this recruitment .
