Department
Architecture
The Department of Urbanism in the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology was established in 1948 and since then has contributed to academic knowledge of the urban environment and design and planning interventions. The Urbanism research group’s core task is to mobilise its multidisciplinary knowledge, skills and reputation towards the creation of more sustainable living environments. The priority is to contribute solutions to the urgent challenges of urbanisation in the context of climate change. In total 128 people work for the department with a total staffing of 67,7 FTE.
The chair of Urban Compositions focuses on formulating a theory and the methodical development of urban designs. The point of departure is our opinion that the spatial structure of the city is composed of a fabric, with which an area of land is made suitable for human use (programme) and imparting significance. This urban fabric is composed of various layers: the system of parcels, the network of public space, and the nature of the structures, while the area of land that has been changed can be seen as a fourth layer. The programme, the use of the buildings and open space form the fifth layer.
