Περιγραφή

The objective of this Early Stage Researcher post is to assess the impact of road network condition on truck fleet fuel consumption. This is of increasing importance to road authorities in helping to determine optimum maintenance strategies. Previous studies have shown that road pavement evenness and stiffness can influence truck fuel consumption but these investigations have involved small numbers of trucks and limited road sites. Modern trucks now carry fuel sensors that can be used to monitor fuel consumption at fleet level. Together with road network condition data, these measurements can be used to verify the previous studies at a fleet and network level. The results can then be used in carbon footprint studies to provide the information needed for road authorities to have confidence in including this factor in maintenance optimisation.

TRUSS is structured into taught modules combined with original and impactful research supported by secondments that will give the successful candidates significant insights and exposure to research and innovation in both academia and industry. The successful candidate will register for a PhD at the University of Nottingham and will carry out the majority of research in NTEC in the Faculty of Engineering.

The successful candidate will also undertake two industrial secondments, at a truck telematics company and a road research consultancy.

Requirements
