Περιγραφή
- You will contribute to research of the CML-IE Department. A main research project will be the aforementioned Smart Industrial Parks project, focused on the assessment and development of scenarios for closing materials and energy flows in industrial parks (circular economy). The research in the context of CMM will focus on trade flows and their impacts on the functioning of mainports and metropolises;
- Teaching duties will be limited, and may consist of some ad-hoc contributions to the courses of the MSc Industrial Ecology, the CML Minor Sustainable Development and the Leiden University College Sustainability track;
- You will also contribute to the acquisition of new research projects, particularly in the context of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Metropolises and Mainports;
- You must be willing to embark on regular international travels in the context of the aforementioned projects, particularly to China.
Requirements
- You must have a PhD in a relevant field and ideally has proven already to be productive in terms of scientific output. Relevant backgrounds include PhDs in industrial metabolism, industrial ecology, sustainability science, (regional) economics and modelling, applied mathematics, trade and competitiveness;
- Knowledge of industrial ecology tools including environmentally extended input output analysis, life-cycle assessment and material flow analysis is essential. You ideally have experience with linking analyses at the micro- and meso level (cities, industrial parks) with the macro level;
- Proficiency in data gathering, data compilation and analysis is important. The same applies to mathematical knowledge with regard to data reconciliation and analysis, matrix/linear algebra, etc.;
- Knowledge of a MatLab or similar programming environment, Python and/or system dynamic modeling is a prerequisite;
- You should be able to work in a dynamic, multi-project context: distributing his or her attention among the various projects and tasks, keeping an eye to deadlines and deliverables, taking initiatives and contacting partners;
- The international character of the work necessitates proficiency in English, passive and active, written and spoken. Proficiency in Dutch is an advantage;
- University level teaching skills should be excellent and be demonstrable.

Leiden University is one of Europe's foremost research universities. This prominent position gives our graduates a leading edge in applying for academic posts and for functions outside academia.
Department
Faculty of Science, Institute of Environmental Sciences Leiden (CML)
The Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) is positioned in the Faculty of Sciences of Leiden University. The core business of CML is to perform research and education in the interdisciplinary field of Environmental Sciences. CML has two Departments: Industrial Ecology (CML-IE) and Conservation Biology (CML-CB). Presently, around 40 fte (including postdocs and PhDs) are employed at CML. CML collaborates with the TU Delft and Erasmus University in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability (LDE-CfS) and Centre for Metropoles and Mainports (LDE-CMM).
Research in the CML-IE department aims to provide a solid scientific basis for the analysis of sustainability related by a.o. Life cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis (MFA) and environmentally extended input output analysis (EE IO). CML-IE is one of the globally best known institutes in its field, reflected by e.g. participation in the UNEP Resource Panel and leadership of various million Euros of EU funded projects on the global relations between trade, economic production by industry sector and country, resource flows, and emissions. Next to that CML-IE is involved in projects related to the application and further development of Industrial Ecology tools like Life Cycle (Sustainability) Assessment and Material Flow Analysis for specific case studies such as aquaculture, concrete recycling etc. (see for example here and here.
Currently, 20 researchers including PhD students and postdocs work at CML-IE. We offer a vibrant, research-driven work environment with emphasis on team spirit, excellence, and skills development. CML and Chinese partners recently were awarded a project on Smart Industrial Parks funded by the Dutch and Chinese Science foundations, whereas the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Metropolises and Mainports also has CML awarded funding for staff.
