Bravo! A Successful Start to the MA (Hons) Education in Greece

HAEd DundeeThe first year of the International partnership between the School of Education, Social Work and Community Education and The Hellenic Association for Education (HAEd) has been a great success.

The University is situated on the Costeas-Geitonas International Baccalaureate World School campus, in Athens, alongside children and students from Nursery to International Baccalaureate Diploma level. This is undoubtedly an ideal location for Initial Teacher Education and aspiring teachers, particularly if they wish to pursue teaching in international schools throughout the world.

HAEd 1year1As the MA (Hons) Education students are coming to the end of their first year in Dundee, the same is true of the students in Athens, Greece.

The Athens students have been following an almost identical programme to their peers in Dundee with the exception of Greek elective modules that are required to be able to teach in Greece. Like the Scottish students, they are currently completing their Professional school placement, only the majority of their teaching is in Greek rather than English! Unlike Initial Teacher Education in Greece, the school placement is a significant part of the Dundee degree and the students have benefitted greatly from the experience.

Some of the feedback has included:

"it makes theory make sense"

"this week (the first week) was one of the most difficult and busy weeks in my life... I feel very happy and very tired!!"

"it has been a great experience, everyone was very co-operative, and it is good to have the University beside the school."

Making the valuable links between theory and practice is a key focus of the Programme and developing this early on is a real advantage of the Dundee MA. The reality of being a teacher can only be learned in the classroom as the students have been discovering.

HAEd 1year2External feedback on the programme has been very positive so far both from our external examiners and the University itself. The end of January saw the first Quality Assurance visit from the University by Teresa Moran (Associate Dean of Education & Professional Development) and Tom Hamilton (Director of Education and Professional Learning, General Teaching Council for Scotland) which highlighted the comparability of the learning and teaching experience in Athens to that in Dundee. They were highly delighted with the Programme and very confident in the equity of demand with the Dundee Campus Programme.

Although selection for the Dundee MA has been completed, to respond to the different academic timescale in Greece, applications are still being accepted for the Athens programme. The programme is open to anyone, whether UK/EU national or whether of international origin, or who wishes to study Teacher Education at undergraduate level in Athens (subject to particular funding arrangements).
